Top 10 VR Games on Steam, October 2020

Here is the current list of the current best-reviewed VR games on Steam. We've seen some good movement this since the last month. However, the top spot is still held by last month's leader.

Space Engine (Early Access) #10

  • Steam Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (3,391 reviews)
  • Multiplayer: Single-Player Only
  • Supported Controls: Motion Controllers/Gamepad/Mouse
  • Play Area: Seated/Standing/Room-Scale
  • Supported Devices: Index/Vive/Rift/WMR

Our Take: A unique and beautiful way to see the stars and other cosmological events.

“SpaceEngine is a 1:1 scale science-based Universe simulator, featuring billions upon billions of galaxies, nebulae, stars, and planets, all shown at their full real-world scale. Explore Earth and our neighboring worlds in the Solar System, orbit a black hole in a galaxy billions of light-years away, or visit anything in between seamlessly, with no transitions.”

Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades (Early Access) #9

  • Steam Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (7,496 reviews)
  • Multiplayer: Single-Player Only
  • Supported Controls: Motion Controllers
  • Play Area: Room-Scale
  • Supported Devices: Index/Vive/Rift/WMR

Our Take: Perhaps the best way to experience real weapons in VR along with some mini-games to play with them in.

“Do you like hotdogs? How about horseshoes? Hand grenades? (everyone likes hand grenades) Anyway, we've got all that, and guns. So if you like cooking, lawn games, and ordnance, this is the VR sandbox game for you.”

Beat Saber #8

  • Steam Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (36,744 reviews)
  • Multiplayer: Single-Player
  • Supported Controls: Motion Controllers
  • Play Area: Seated/Standing/Room-Scale
  • Supported Devices: Index/Vive/Rift/WMR

Our Take: Surprising only because it isn’t further up the list, Beat Saber is a rhythm game everyone can get into. If you don’t like the base music, make sure to check out Beatsaver.com.

“Beat Saber is an immersive rhythm experience you have never seen before! Enjoy tons of handcrafted levels and swing your way through the pulsing music beats, surrounded by a futuristic world. Use your sabers to slash the beats as they come flying at you – Every beat indicates which saber you need to use and the direction you need to match. With Beat Saber, you become a dancing superhero!”

Compound (Early Access) #7

  • Steam Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (531 reviews)
  • Multiplayer: Single-Player
  • Supported Controls: Motion Controllers
  • Play Area: Standing/Room-Scale
  • Supported Devices: Index/Vive/Rift/WMR

Our Take: This one is a surprise entry. Not for those new to VR. Compound tries to freshen up the experience by pushing the bounds of locomotion, with a retro look.

“COMPOUND, while still a very early work in progress, is a randomized, rogue-lite, free-roaming shooter for Virtual Reality veterans. Duck and dodge around enemy fire in a tough-as-nails retro FPS with multiple locomotion options. Prepare to die - a lot - until you are good enough to reach the heart of The Corporation and take back what belongs to everyone...”

IronWolf VR (Early Access) #6

  • Steam Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (607 reviews)
  • Multiplayer: Single-Player/Splitscreen Co-op/Splitscreen PvP/Online
  • Supported Controls: Motion Controllers
  • Play Area: Standing/Room-Scale
  • Supported Devices: Index/Vive/Rift/WMR

Our Take: A game where you can play Co-Op is always a win, and when you can do that in a face-paced arcade sub-sim what’s not to love.

“IronWolf VR is a room-scale submarine game playable either as singleplayer or online co-op. Unleash torpedoes on enemy ships, shoot down fighters and bombers using anti-aircraft guns, and attempt to survive depth charges dropped by deadly destroyers. Built from the ground up for VR, each part of the submarine has been crafted for the best possible VR experience.”

Waltz of the Wizard (Legacy) #5

  • Steam Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (1,315 reviews)
  • Multiplayer: Single-Player/Shared Split screen Co-Op
  • Supported Controls: Motion Controllers
  • Play Area: Standing/Room-Scale
  • Supported Devices: Index/Vive/Rift/WMR

Our Take: An excellent way to experience the magic of VR, and it's free.

“Waltz of the Wizard is a virtual reality experience that lets you feel what it’s like to have magical powers. Combine arcane ingredients into a boiling cauldron with the help of an ancient spirit trapped in a human skull. Unleash creative or destructive wizardry upon a fully interactive virtual world. Travel to new places, finding yourself in mysterious circumstances full of detail and unforgettable atmosphere.”

  • Steam Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (2,926 reviews)
  • Multiplayer: Single Player Only
  • Supported Controls: Motion Controllers
  • Play Area: Seated/Standing
  • Supported Devices: Index/Vive/Rift/WMR

Our Take: Based on a long series of games, fans will love experiencing it in VR, along with anyone else who wants a good scare.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted is a collection of classic and original mini-games set in the Five Nights universe. Survive terrifying encounters with your favorite killer animatronics in a collection of new and classic FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S™ experiences. “Where fantasy and fun come to life!”

  • Multiplayer: Online Co-op
  • Supported Controls: Motion Controllers
  • Play Area: Standing/Room-Scale
  • Supported Devices: Index/Vive/Rift/WMR

Our Take: A game that lets you experience spooky/suspenseful situations in VR with friends makes this one stand out from the standard jump scare fare.

“Phasmophobia is a 4 player online co-op psychological horror where you and your team members of paranormal investigators will enter haunted locations filled with paranormal activity and gather as much evidence of the paranormal as you can. You will use your ghost hunting equipment to search for and record evidence of whatever ghost is haunting the location to sell onto a ghost removal team.”

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes #2

  • Steam Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (6,797 reviews)
  • Multiplayer: Shared/Splitscreen Co-op
  • Supported Controls: Motion Controllers/Gamepad
  • Play Area: Seated/Standing
  • Supported Devices: Index/Vive/Rift/WMR

Our Take: A fun escape-room style game that is put together with equal amounts of cleverness and fun.

“You’re alone in a room with a bomb. Your friends, the “Experts,” have the manual needed to defuse it. But there’s a catch: the Experts can’t see the bomb, so everyone will need to talk it out – fast!”

Half-Life Alyx #1

  • Steam Rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (32,557 reviews)
  • Multiplayer: Single Player Only
  • Supported Controls: Motion Controllers Required
  • Play Area: Seated/Standing/Room-Scale
  • Supported Devices: Index/Vive/Rift/WMR

Our Take: It’s still here, Half-Life Alyx tops the list again. With both solid controls and excellent graphics its is an engrossing experience that nearly everyone loves.

“Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.”
